Brazil Plays Tomorrow in the World Cup

Hello all,

As I mentioned in an earlier post, Brazilians incessant obsession with futebol (soccer) is one of the more annoying aspects of living here. So you can imagine what is happening now. Offices are closing, bus schedules have been reduced, and beer is flying off the grocery shelves.

I’m trying, really trying, to get interested, but if it isn’t ACC basketball or March Madness, it’s hard for me to get excited.

But, since they have a giant screen set up only a few blocks from my apartment in Copacabana, I will do my duty as your reporter in Brazil and go check it out. I plan to get some film. I’m not sure what to expect exactly. I’ve survived 4 Caranvals here, and I can’t imagine tomorrow will be crazier, but as the field narrows, if Brazil progresses toward the Cup – and they are a favorite to win – then things may get very, very crazy. After all, the World Cup only happens once every 4 years. (Think Mr. Spock and pon farr.)

So look for a fresh post on Wednesday. Meanwhile, I will paste in a couple videos for your soccer fans. Excuse me, football fans.

The first is a guy hyping Brazil and why they should win. The second shows highlights from the 2002 World Cup finals game, in which Brazil defeated Germany 2-0.

I really have no idea what I am in for on the beach tomorrow. I’m doing this for you, my readers.

Até mais. Until next time.

John

And we will be eternally grateful, John. I have already pledged to be in Brazil in 2014. I sure hope I will be able to handle all that excitment 8-)
