Brazilian Holiday: Republic Day
Posted in Brazil Facts on 15. Nov, 2010
Hi all,
Today is yet another Brazilian holiday, Republic Day. It was on November 15th, 1889, that Emperor Pedro II was overthrown by the military, led by Marshall Deodora de Fonseca. Brazil struggled for some years to find her identity. Today Brazil is a republic, modeled in part on the US.
A friend of my father, Sid Alford, was a pilot and began flying down here in the ’40s. Sid was married for years to a Brazilian woman. He writes about Brazil frequently on his blog. Those of you who are interested in learning more about Brazil’s history are encouraged to pay his blog a visit. You can find an entry about the 1889 coup at http://web.me.com/sidneylalford24/Sidney-Alford-NOVELS/PART_IV__THE_REPUBLIC_.html.
Talk to you again soon.
John
