Chilly? Come to Rio de Janeiro

It’s hot.
I mean, it’s really hot.
You may be sitting in the kitchen in Oshkosh right now, sipping hot cocoa, but in the Southern Hemisphere it’s the height of summertime, and we are baking.
On Sunday, the temperature reached 40.4 C in Zona Sul (South Zone), which includes Copacabana and Ipanema.
For those of you not versed in the metric system, 37 C is body temperature. 40.4 C equates to 105 F.
As I said, it’s hot.
I had the pleasure of working in Canada several years ago (during the coldest winter they’d seen in over 30 years) and became acquainted with the metric system. A Canuck on the project taught me the following little mnemonic:
“30 is hot, 20 is not, 10 is nice, 0 is ice.”
To convert from Centigrade to Fahrenheit you use the following formula: 9/5 C + 32 = F, so:
30 C = 86 F, 20 C = 20 C = 68 F, 10 C = 50 F, and 0 C = 32 F.
The mnemonic is helpful, although I think only a Canadian would consider 50 Fahrenheit “nice”.
But then again, it’s better than 105 F.
Thank God I live 3 blocks from the beach, and the currents bring cool waters, and the sun brings bikinis.
See ya!
