Corpus Christi Day
Posted in Brazil Facts, Holidays & History on 24. Jun, 2011
Hi all,
Yesterday was the Day of Corpus Christi, yet another religious holiday here in Brazil. I took advantage this time and took a long weekend. Currently I am south of Rio in lovely Paraty. More on that later.
“Corpus Christi” is Latin for Body of Christ. The day os celebrated in the Catholic Church and also some Anglican and Lutheran churches. It is a day to honor the body of Christ, rather than any specific event in his life.
Throughout much of Brazil the day is marked by processions. Often the streets are first decorated with temporary images made variously of colored chalk, sand, or sawdust. Some of these “paintings” can be quite elaborate.
I remember that by chance I visited Brazil for the fist time in late June, and Claudete took me to se some of these street paintings.
Well, I have limited internet time here at the internet cafe. More soon!
Ate mais, guys
