Friday Postcard: Beach near Búzios

Hi all,

I hope that you have had a good week and that you’ve escaped the inclement weather that much of the US has suffered recently.

In case you’ve been dealing with a late-season cold snap, this week’s postcard is of a beach.

East from Rio along the coast (which here runs east-west) lies the area known variously as the Lakes Region and the Sun Coast. The main destination for visitors here is the small town of Búzios, which means “conch”. Búzios is typically described as “quaint” and “chic”. It is European in appearance and feel, with upscale shops and trendy restaurants lining the two parallel streets that form the center of the town. This is a wonderful side trip from Rio, and a perfect romantic getaway for couples.

But as alluring as the town itself are the beaches nearby. The exact count varies depending on which source you choose to believe, but 26 is a commonly touted number.

Last year I hired guide Celinho to drive me around the area. (You could rent a car yourself, but you would have a devil of a time finding some of these beaches, many of which are accessed by unmarked dirt roads.) A local (and former soccer star), Celinho is a wealth of information about the beaches and history of the area.

A driving tour of the beaches on your first or second day is a great way to decide where you’d like to devote your time while in Búzios. The different beaches have their different personalities. Some of the beaches, like the one pictured here, may be almost deserted, while others are popular with surfers or girl watchers.

I must confess that Celinho and I visited so many beaches, I’m not sure which one you’re looking at here! But it certainly is lovely, and representative of what you can find here, just a couple of hours by van from Rio.

Até mais (Until soon),

John

    Hey John,

Buzios is absolutely exquisite… Praia de Joao Fernandez, Geriba, just to mention a few, are pieces of paradise… I personally loooooooove Cabo Frio. When I begin suffering from human warmth depravation, a trip to Rio and the Lakes Region is a must to catch up my breath. If one day a hit the lottery, I know exactly where I’m taking my behind to… BTW, Celinho is flamenguista. You’re in good company… LOL!

    Beijoca!

    XOXOXO,
    Cheers!

BTW John, I found your blog because I was browsing sites with anything related to the Regiao dos Lagos, and your post about Buzios popped up. On this post you also have this video about Caipirinha. Your comment on it, “Tasty, but deadly,” caught my attention and earned a spot on my blog! LOL! I hope you don’t mind. Feel free to check it out if you like! Have a good one!
    XOXOXO – Cheers!
    Tchau, tchau!
