Friday Postcard: Fisherman casting his hand net
Posted in Random Musings, Rio de Janeiro on 13. Aug, 2010
Hi all,
Folks who have never traveled to a developing country often imagine that developing countries are uninformly poor and backward. In truth, what you will see in a developing country are marked contrasts, with, for example, a homeless man sleeping on the street in front of a towering office building. (Hey, kind of reminds you of Washington, DC, doesn´t it?)
Here in Rio, in Ipanema, you´ll find an example of this. Quite literally a stone´s throw from one of the ritziest social clubs in Brazil, located on Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, you can watch a fisherman cast his hand net each morning to earn his living. I´m not going to get all philosophical. I just find it mildy whimsical and, in an odd sort of way, reassuring.
Literally one block away:
Well, I am going to grab a quick bite and meet some friends in Lapa, the bohemian neighborhood adjacent to downtown.
Um abraço!
John
