Friday Postcard: Praia Vermelha and Sugarloaf

Hi all,

Well, I had a great day today. One of my readers, Van Fry from North Carolina (my old stomping grounds) passed through Rio on his way back home after visiting Vitoria (which you may remember was the first place I visited here in Brazil). Anyway, I me him at the airport and we visited the street market at Uruguaiana and then visited the hilltop community of Santa Teresa. If you will be passing this way, drop my a line at John@JohnInBrazil.Org and I will do my best to meet you and show you around a bit.

This week’s postcard is of the little-known Praia Vermelho, or Red Beach. Everyone has heard of Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, but there are many more beaches in Rio and its environs. One of them, tiny Praia Vermelha, sits at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain. After you descend from the top of Sugarloaf, why not sip from a chilled coconut on this pretty little beach which sees few foreigners? And if you are up for a bit of exercise, there is the walking trail Pista do Claudio Coutinho on the other side of Praia Vermelho from the entrance to the Sugarloaf cable car.

Would you like to learn more about Sugarloaf, plus the Christ the Redeemer statue and Santa Teresa as well? Visit www.VisualTravelTours.com, where you can find my tour “Rio: Sugarloaf, Christ The Redeemer & Santa Teresa,” as well as tours of Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, and more.

Well, it’s off to a night of jazz, and tomorrow there’s the air show, and the yellow/green party in Lapa tomorrow night, and if the weather holds clear, the beach on Sunday afternoon, and then…
