Friday Postcard: The Copacabana Fresh Market

Hi all,

Most Fridays I post a picture of some stunning location I’ve visited in Brazil. Certainly there is no shortage of wondrous scenery here.

But day-to-day life is colorful and entertaining as well.

Each Wednesday I go to the fresh market held a few blocks away from my apartment here in Copacabana, near the Siqueira Campos metro stop. This market rotates. On Tuesdays, it can be found at Praça General Osório in Ipanema, and on Fridays at Praça Nossa Senhora da Paz, also in Ipanema.

At the market, you can find a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, fresh from the farm. You’ll also find a corner dedicated to fish; just follow your nose! Whew!

Wait! Stop! Try a sample!

I like to make a pot or two of veggie soup each week, so I stock up on green stuff. A visit to the fresh market for me is less of a chore than a fun little morning outing. Since many of the vendors sell the same produce, they often compete with personality. They accost you, offering you free slices of melon, cut for you at the moment. (Why does the guy have to use such a big knife?) There’s no point in trying to dodge or say no. You’ll find your path blocked. (And there’s that big knife.) Accept the offered slice and enjoy. Melon not what you are shopping for today? How about a strawberry. Damn, that IS pretty good.

This Wednesday I was snagged by Henrique and his crew. I couldn’t say No. They were just too happy and friendly. They offer a wide selection, and their fruits are high quality. If you find yourself down here,  stop by the market (they visit all the locations mentioned above) and pay them a visit. Tell them John the gringo sent you, and maybe I’ll get a discount!

I wonder if I have any strawberries left…

Have a good weekend. Talk soon. Abraços,

John

Hi Fabio! Thanks for the nice comments. I fell in love with Brazil a long time ago and overall I enjoy living here. It isn’t perfect, but no place is. But I’m happy here, and love the nature. If you have suggestions for topics, please send them!
