Video Clip: Gabriel Moura Live in Lapa
Posted in Activities, Rio de Janeiro on 07. Nov, 2010
Hi all,
Hope you had a good weekend. We are truly entering summer now (seasons being reversed here). It was a gorgeous day at the beach today after the early-morning haze dissipated. The bikini brigade was out in full force. I didn’t stop smiling all afternoon. There may be better places to be on a Sunday afternoon than Posto 9 on Ipanema Beach, but I’ve never been there.
Oh, yes, but this post is supposed to about Friday evening. On Thursday, one of my students, Teresa, invited me to join her, her husband, and a friend in Lapa, the Bohemian area adjacent to downtown. We met about 10:00 at a club called Lapinha to see singer/songwriter Gabriel Moura and his band.
I have to confess that I hadn’t heard of these guys before, but they were really good. The band consists of: Gabriel (lead vocals and guitar), a keyboard player, a bassist, drummer, another percussion player (this is Brazil after all), and a sax/flute player. Every one of the guys is very good. More than that, you could see that they truly enjoyed playing together, and really fed off one another.
Teresa told me that Moura writes all of the songs he performs. They range from neo-samba to fast-paced jazz. Really a good mix, and very enjoyable.
I had my iPod with me, and shot a little video, which Gabriel said I could post. The quality isn’t stellar, but the video will give you some idea of what it’s like listening to live music in an intimate club in Rio. Towards the end of the video, you’ll hear the audience joining in to accompany Gabriel. That’s Brazil!

If your weekend wasn’t as good as mine, maybe you should come visit. Shoot me a message and I’ll help you plan a trip down.
Ate mais, gente.
John
