Video: Damon’s Massage on the Beach

Hi all,

Well, I’m back. My absence was imposed by the death of my Apple MacBook Pro.

I can tell you one thing: If you plan to relocate to Brazil, bring a PC. It is next to impossible to get an Apple serviced here. Parts, if they can be found, are 3-4 times the cost of the same in the US. Authorized outlets are few and far between, even here in Rio. Consider yourself warned.

But I am now back in business!

Quick update about the World Cup: Brazil made a premature exit on Friday, falling to The Netherlands 2-1. Interestingly, as much as Brazilians love their football and take it veery seriously, the mood on Friday was not one of sadness. Brazilians tend to take things in stride. Saturday they were once again ensconced before their TVs, this time cheering on Germany against Brazil’s arch-rival, Argentina. (Who also fell. A bad weekend for South America.)

I will bring you some video from the games very soon. I promise, Ben! However, I think you’ll enjoy today’s little detour.

My friend Damon owns a language school here in Rio (www.WingsEnglish.com) and works much too much. When we met yesterday, I mentioned that I was going over to Ipanema Beach to chat with a couple of new friends who are massage therapists and give massages on the beach. Damon’s ears perked up and we walked over so that he could have a well-deserved massage.

We found Lu finishing up a massage when we arrived, and her friend Mariana showed up a few minutes later. So Damon, the lucky stiff, was treated to a 4-handed massage.

By the way, I wrote recently about the best massage on Copacabana Beach. If you happen to be here in Rio on a Saturday or Sunday, I recommend that you instead head straight for Ipanema. There, near Post 9 and directly across from the Sol Ipanema Hotel, you can find my friends Lu and Mariana, and get what is sure to be one of the best massages of your life. I swear. It might be worth flying here for.

Check out some video of Damon melting into the massage table – when I’m not interrupting his reverie.

Rio: It doesn’t suck.

Ate mais, gente. (“Until more, people.”)

John

Glad that you enjoyed it! The massage is even better when your friend isn’t holding his iPod up to your face! Seriously though, I am going back. Lu and Nana are great!
