Video: Trailer of 3D animated movie Rio

Hi all,

I hope that you had a good weekend. It was overcast and occasionally rainy here in Rio, which means that most Cariocas stayed inside. It is amazing how much the weather dictates the demeanor of the city.

My friend and JohnInBrazil reader Fabio Bossard sent me a notice about an upcoming animated movie about – you guessed it! – Rio. Titled, simply enough, Rio. Here’s the official blurb:

‘Rio’ is a 3-D animation feature from the makers of the ‘Ice Age’ films. Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there’s another — and that she’s a she — he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it’s far from love at first sight between the domesticated and flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life’s many wonders. ‘Rio’ brings together a menagerie of vivid characters, a heart-warming story, colorful backdrops, energizing Latin and contemporary music, and family-friendly song and dance.

Here’s the trailer:

If this trailer looks oddly familiar to regular readers, it may be because I went hang gliding from Pedra Bonita, too.

Rio is from 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios. It is directed by Brazilian Carlos Saldanha, who brought us Ice Age.

The movie is due out next April. It sounds formulaic, but I really can’t pass this one up, can I?

Ate mais, gente. And thanks for the heads up, Fabio!

John

This movie was brought to my attention last year by a number of people because guess where the macaw is from? Minnesota! They describe him as a “nerdy Minnesotan macaw” who wants to escape the cold. Isn’t that cute, funny and ironic?

I watched the trailer a couple of months ago and thought it seemed a little formulaic, as you said, and also stereotypical, but for me, it definitely can’t be passed up. I wonder if they will show scenes from Minnesota in the movie!
